Daingerfield Math Team Advances to UIL State Meet
Daingerfield Math Team, composed of Seniors Dante Salazar and Taurean Drake and
Freshman Mattie Phillips all coached by David Brotherton qualified to compete for UIL State 3A
Number Sense and Calculator contests at the UIL State Meet held in Austin at the University of
Texas on May 15th. The Tigers did it by finishing second at the 3A UIL Regional II Meet held at
Tyler Junior College on April 27th. The Tigers had the best score of all the 2nd place teams in
the four Regional Meets and thus will advance as the Wild Card Team in both events.
At the Regional Meet in Number Sense, Salazar captured 5th place and Drake took 6th. Both
Drake and Phillips had their best competitive scores of the year and pulled Daingerfield ahead of
Dallas Life Oak Cliff HS by two points, or less than a question to take second place behind
fellow District 15 school Gladewater Sabine which won both the Number Sense and Calculator
events. The Tigers won the Wild Card by defeating second place Brock in Region I by eight
points or just two questions. At the State 3A Meet in Number Sense, Daingerfield will be
competing against Gladewater Sabine, Mission Collegiate, Wichita Falls City View, and New
Waverly.
At the Regional Calculator contest, Salazar scored near to his season high and led the Tigers
by taking 4th place. Drake finished in 9th place and Phillips claimed 12th place out of forty-two
contestants. The Tigers once again finished behind Gladewater Sabine and got second place
distancing 3rd place Ponder by seven questions. The Tigers won the Wild Card by defeating
second place Tuscola Jim Ned in Region I by twelve questions. At the State 3A Meet in
Calculator, Daingerfield will be competing against Mision Collegiate, Gladewater Sabine, Brock
and Grapevine-Colleyville Collegiate Academy.
